What got you into "try"ing sports: Initially just getting fit and losing weight…then the challenge of Triathlon took over and I was addicted..From then each race became a new goal, from Sprint to Olympic to ½ Ironman. This year I have thrown my hat into the Iron distance by entering Ironman Florida.

Brian L. Fancher

Occupation: Program Manager

What got you in to “try”ing sports? I have been a triathlete for 25 years, having first gotten into the sport after watching the TV coverage of the Hawaii Ironman. I did my first triathlon in 1985. I have completed over 200 triathlons and duathlons, 55 marathons, and countless shorter running and cycling events. Run, Bike, Swim is a way of life for me. One of the best parts of being part of the TrySports Ambassador Team is giving back to the sport through mentoring other athletes who are just beginning their multisport journeys.

Favorite Post-Race Meal: My favorite post race meal is the Chili and big honkin’ stein of Keegan’s Mother’s Milk Ale served up at the American Zofingen Duathlon. There is no better way to celebrate completing 104 miles of suffering !

Favorite Shoe: After all these years, I still hold my 1982 Nike Internationalist most dearly. They were my first pair of real running shoes and I must have put 1000 miles on them before they completely fell apart. I am currently enjoying running in the Brooks Launch.

Your Goal for 2010: I want to run sub 2:50 at the Kiawah Island Marathon and set a good base for attempting sub 2:40 in 2011.

When the going gets tough: Press on. Your competitors are suffering more than you are!

Mike Zoltanski

Occupation: Contractor and Merchant - Costco Wholesale

What got you into "try"ing sports: At one point, post-college I found myself sitting on the couch just watching TV and snacking on junk food. My life then consisted of working, the occasional round of golf and lounging around the house. I realized that I didn't like what my life had become and I needed a change. I wanted to get outdoors and get active so, I bought a road bike. After a couple of years of just cycling I entered my first running race. It was the Turkey Trot 5K here in Charleston. Now, I didn't post a record breaking time or anything, but it felt great to get out there and GO! Feeling good about the accomplishment, I called up an old friend, Dave, who I knew was the active type and told him about my experience. He congratulated me, but then told me how he completed an Ironman triathlon earlier that year. Right then and there I was stoked. I decided that I would have to race one as well.

I haven't done an Ironman yet, but I'm getting closer and closer. I've built up some very good triathlon experience. I still have much to learn and with the help of my friends at TrySports I know my Ironman dreams are going to be a reality in the not to distant future.

Favorite post-race meal: a chicken sandwich and fries. I know I said, fries. You can spoil yourself once in awhile. Right?

Favorite shoe: the Brooks Ravenna.

Your Goal for 2011: to get much faster for the short course triathlons.

When the going gets tough...(finish the sentence): the tough dig deep, finding their competitive spirit, and keep on pushing toward that finish line.n

Favorite Post-Race Meal: Steak & Baked Potato; the Chicago cut at Gibson’s after the 2010 Chicago Marathon might have been the best (and most well-earned) steak of my life!

Favorite Shoe: Saucony Progrid Guide

Your Goal for 2011: Being awesome!

When the going gets tough...(finish the sentence): Wait, what’s tough? I’m a runner and triathlete – “tough” is not in my vocabulary! In the words of one of my idols, Michael Jordan, "My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength."

Siobhan Maize
